Bubble Operations Update

Post Date:11/08/2024

Dear Park City Tennis and Pickleball players,

Balancing the competing interests of different user groups in our facilities is a challenge we continuously work to address. As you are all aware, we have a very high demand for both tennis and pickleball court space during the winter months, as we condense from 11 tennis courts and four pickleball courts to just seven indoor courts and our gymnasium.

Over the last several years, we have operated the courts with a tennis priority and turned any underutilized tennis time over to pickleball. This past summer, the Recreation Advisory Board (RAB) assembled a Court-Usage Sub-Committee to dive deeper into different court usage options between tennis and pickleball.

The Committee consisted of three members of RAB, a respected member of the tennis and pickleball communities, and the Racquet Sports Division Manager (me). The Committee met five times over the course of six months and again met 10 plus hours over the last three weeks and discussed different court allocation options at length. On Tuesday, November 5th, the Recreation Advisory Board voted to approve the plan outlined, which we plan to implement beginning on November 25th.

  • Tennis and Pickleball will be scheduled separately, with either sport occupying the entire bubble at their dedicated time.
  • We will not have side-by-side play at this time.
  • Court allocation schedule

We will give 48–120 hrs. advance notice when releasing unused tennis AND pickleball times.

  • Monday at 11 a.m. for Wednesday- Saturday
  • Thursday at 11 a.m. for Sunday- Tuesday

This will put increased pressure on both tennis and pickleball players to plan when they want to play, as any unused time will be turned over to the other sport. Given that there is no side-by-side play, if one court in the bubble is being used for either sport, the remaining courts will remain scheduled for that sport.

We will be using email as well as the PlaybyPoint App. If you would like to be notified when additional tennis and pickleball court time becomes available, please make sure your notifications are turned on OR please email me at cole.johnston@parkcity.org

Please be mindful of our 24-hour cancellation policy. Last-minute cancellations will impact our ability to open additional court time in a timely manner.

To encourage additional play during underutilized times, we will be offering FREE Play from 6:00am-8:00am Monday- Friday:

Tennis: Free Play Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday             Pickleball: Free Play Tuesday/ Thursday

To assist with tracking, normal court operations will still apply: Please reserve the court online ahead of time. No more than 4 players per court.

We will also offer Open-Play Pickleball in the gymnasium each Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. This will be available for a $12 daily drop-in fee or is included with a facility pass.

Our hope is that this will give players of both sports the ability to plan with the understanding that they can play their respective sports on dedicated days and times.

For more information on court allocation decisions for this winter, please refer to the Court Allocation Sub-Committee Recommendation FAQs here.

We ask that our community continue to work together to share a common space and respect this new operational plan.

Thank you,

Cole Johnston, CPRP
